GitHub Copilot Custom Instructions: What They Cover and Where They Stop

Copilot supports repository-wide and path-specific instructions.

Start with those files, then consider how your team keeps the same decisions current across coding agents.

In breve

Copilot supports repository-wide instructions, path-specific instruction files and agent instruction files. They are a useful way to share guidance through Git. Pathrule adds typed memories, rules and skills, attributed updates and task-scoped delivery across supported agents; it does not replace Copilot or claim that file-based scoping is missing.

Pathrule
Pathrule è il livello di intelligenza tra te, il tuo workspace e i tuoi agenti di programmazione.

Di cosa parla

  • File-based guidance is versioned in Git and is a good starting point for a team.
  • Pathrule adds typed knowledge, shared updates and delivery across supported coding agents; blocking depends on the client’s hook capabilities.

Start with native instructions

GitHub’s documentation distinguishes repository-wide instructions, path-specific files under .github/instructions and agent instruction files. A root file is not the only way to scope guidance.

Keep repository-wide guidance short. Put package-specific build commands and conventions in the path-specific form your Copilot surface supports. Review them alongside the code they describe.

The problem after scoping

Scoping helps a rule arrive near the work. It does not decide who maintains the rule, whether a newer decision supersedes it or which knowledge the next coding agent should receive. Git history answers part of that problem well; teams should use it.

When several agents and people write knowledge independently, it becomes harder to know which copy is current. That is the point at which a shared authoring and delivery layer can help.

What Pathrule adds

Pathrule stores memories, rules and skills by workspace path, with attributed updates and versions. The CLI, VS Code extension and MCP connect the existing coding agents your team uses.

Required checks and executable constraints retain their authority where the client exposes the needed hooks. Guidance alone is not a guarantee that an action will be blocked. Your coding agent still performs the work under its own provider account.

Choose the smallest setup that helps

If committed instruction files meet your needs, keep them. If shared knowledge is drifting across agents, start with one package and a few decisions, constraints and procedures in Pathrule. Compare how often reviewers have to repeat them.
